Overalls -- LATE SEASON N FL FREEZE ALERT FOR SATURDAY NIGHT

Reader

We've got a freezing night predicted for Saturday night/Sunday morning, which if it was a little earlier in the year, wouldn't matter because a 30 degree night -- especially after all the rain we've gotten-- wouldn't adversely affect cool-season crops at all, but... many of us have already gotten our tomatoes & other frost-tender in the ground. So what to do?

Short answer: Water and cover. But, the rain took care of the first, so just get things covered. Any sort of cover will help: sheets, blankets, landscape fabric, buckets, scattered straw or leaves. You just want a layer of protection between your crops and the cold, night air falling from above. And, you especially want to protect the bases and trunks of your tomatoes and peppers as they can take a light burn to their leaves and keep growing, but if the trunks freeze, they're goners.

One last thing: turn off your irrigation on Saturday so it doesn't flash thaw anything first thing Sunday morning.

While I'm writing, quick question: If we launched an online "Survival Gardening" workshop series and/or a "Garden Coaching/Support" monthly membership that included 1-on-1 coaching, Q&A, and monthly, seasonal food garden workshops, would you be interested? (We're exploring ways to support exponentially more gardeners in light of the run up in food prices headed our way due to the Russian/ Ukraine war.) Please send feedback and ideas.

Lastly, if you know anyone hoping to start a spring garden, point them towards www.Overalls.Life to book a consultation. Thanks!

Respectfully,
Nathan, Man in Overalls & the rest of team Overalls

PS- If you don't already but would like to receive Man in Overalls' semi-monthly updates which contain stories and food gardening tips, click here to see former updates, and we'll add you to the list.

PPS- If you'd prefer not to get any more seasonal garden reminders ever, click here. If you just don't want them this spring, click here. I hate spam; I get it.

September 8th marks six years since we launched our first Overalls Farm. You may have missed it in the beginning because we didn’t post publicly about it for years. Growing up-an-alley in Jacksonville’s Springfield neighborhood- tucked in a residential backyard (mine, as it were)- it was intentionally kept on the down-low, except as far as the neighborhood was concerned. But then, in June 2023, I shared the origin story on the stage of Florida Theater ending with the dream to replicate our...

A month ago, I told stories from Florida Theater's stage: stories of family, stories of our backyard farm, stories of where we've been and where we're growing. In the month since then, even as we continue to support others to grow their groceries at home, team Overalls received 95 neighbors & community supports for our Farm (2) Raising, and, together, we built our 2nd "unlimited urban uPick" neighborhood farm. Farm Three is already in the works. It's an exciting moment to be wearing Overalls,...
